COMMUNITY NEWS DIRECTOR

CC:Media is looking for a creative, community-oriented leader who is ready to help us reimagine how community news is covered and shared. General Description of Job

The Community News Director is a new position at CC:Media and offers the opportunity to shape community reporting in Salem. The Community News Director reports to and works closely with the Executive Director and is a part of the organization’s leadership team. The position will work with the Executive Director to establish a newsroom environment and begin finding hyperlocal news and stories that matter to the Salem community. This is not a breaking news environment, but we are interested in providing quality information to the community while exploring important issues. We seek to engage with a variety of voices in Salem by highlighting authentic stories of people, places and events. This position requires a driven, self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively across teams, but also has the capacity to work independently and manage time and projects appropriately.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Develop, research, and write compelling stories for audio and digital platforms that adhere to high journalistic standards

• Cultivate community beats and reliable sources

• Develop relationships with business and community leaders, government public information personnel, and other local journalists

• Manage the planning and presentation of original CC:Media news and public affairs programming

• Supervise team of interns & multimedia reporters; provide leadership & guidance to develop skillset

• Make recommendations to Executive Director regarding organizational improvements, including partnerships, policy, staffing, organizational direction, etc.

• Other appropriate duties as assigned

Desirable Skills and Competencies

• Excellent interpersonal and written communications; positive and professional approach

• Knowledge and proficiency in daily use of social media platforms

• Multimedia experience in tv, radio or web journalism (i.e. creating, editing and uploading content)

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position

• Mastery of proper English grammar and spelling

• Understanding of various writing structures for multiple distribution formats

• Experience in developing a story from idea to final product in a content driven environment

• Enthusiasm for CC:Media’s mission of connecting communities and empowering all people through media

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 5 years of experience in published writing, reporting or multimedia creation

• Leadership; at least 5 years of team management and staff development

• Comfortability interviewing guests for radio, tv and/or web content

• Editorial mindset that seeks to understand what audiences consume and how to create and share it

• Deep connection to/in Salem/Keizer communities, and/or within Marion and Polk counties

General Requirements & Information

This position will spend extended periods of time sitting, using a computer for writing and editing. Traveling to community events in-person required. All CC:Media employees need to be able to physically utilize and effectively operate a computer, basic software, and telephone equipment on a regular basis. CC:Media employees also move production equipment and other office supplies, generally anywhere from 5 to 25 pounds. Must be accessible by telephone, as team members communicate regularly by telephone and text. Must have a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record, or access to reliable transportation.

Schedule

This position is full-time, exempt. The schedule is Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week and requires flexibility for possible evening and weekend projects.

Base Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 annually

We provide professional training and consultation to community members, giving them the tools to create their own stories and share their original content with audiences. We provide access to broadcast multimedia technology to promote representational media, diversity and inclusion and access to information.
